The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that nearly 1 in 3 babies in the United States are delivered by cesarean (c-section). Your healthcare provider may suggest one during your pregnancy when a vaginal birth isn't possible or safe for you or your baby. Some women may request to have a c-section instead of a vaginal birth, even without medical need. However, most c-sections are the result of complications that arise during labor, and healing from a c-section usually takes longer than vaginal delivery.
