The Inner Child

By Dana Layon

I found myself saying today “I would rather be playing Barbie’s right now than working!” Can you imagine - me playing Barbie’s? Sometimes I do, I’ll admit but it’s not really the Barbie’s I am excited about on some days – it’s really the chance to be a kid. When do we get to do that? As a society we have all these obligations and appointments and responsibilities – when in the world do we have time to just play?

We observe what’s going on with the economy and wonder how it’s going to affects us. We anticipate the election and worry about what will happen to our nation then! We plan for retirement (some of us) because we just know there will be no social security for us by the time we are ready to retire! We think about decisions we made in the past and how they are affecting our future and wonder if we made the right decision.

None of these thing mentioned truly mean anything. They are thoughts that are about the future! You can never make a decision in the future because all decisions are in the Now. Does that make sense?

So I got to thinking that’s why kids are so happy! They could care less about the future – they could care less about what happened yesterday. All they care about is the NOW! How awesome is that? According to Eckhart Tolle, all power of manifestation is in the Now. All power of what you feel, think and speak are in the Now. There is nothing but the Now.

Wow – our kids have power don’t they?

So I started thinking about how we can – as adults – start connecting to that inner child that we all once were? If we all did that can you imagine what a great world this would be? We would all be more aware, more conscious, happier with where we are right NOW!

We could spend lots of money on therapy trying to figure out what happened way back when. Where our beliefs went askew – what our dreams were and why we haven’t fulfilled them. OR we could do something so simple like carry around a photo of ourselves as a child. Look at it and say - that's me!

Go home today and find the coolest picture you have of you – happy – smiling – having a great time. See that face - that happy, lovely, innocent face? That’s YOU! That’s your spirit! Now put it in your wallet or somewhere in your office or cube and look at it daily. What made you so happy as a child? What were you thinking in that picture? I bet nothing more than about what you were doing!

That little person is your spirit – that small voice you hear sometimes - is that little child guiding you to be happy NOW. We didn’t worry about the future then, why should we worry about it now? We have no control over the economy, we can vote for who we would liketo be President and then be grateful for the gifts the elected President will give us. How about if you just do what you love for the rest of your life finding balance along the way instead of worrying about what will be 30 years from now.

I’m not saying that we can’t plan, vote or make a difference in our life as we know it. All I am saying is to connect first – connect with that beautiful inner child and feel what that feels like.

Remember to take time to do this for your pure happiness. You may not make any change at all but I bet you will feel great just looking at that picture.

Strive to be happy – that is all that matters.
