The upside of C-sections
Because Cindy had some concerns about how anesthesia would affect her ability to bond with the baby, she asked to meet with the anesthesiologist prior to the procedure. He gladly sat down with her in the week before her scheduled C-Section at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. “The anesthesiologist was just great,” remarked Cindy. “He quickly allayed my fears in our initial meeting and put me completely at ease during the procedure–even making me and my husband laugh.” In fact, everything about Cindy’s second delivery was smooth and efficient. “On the day of surgery, I checked in an hour before as requested. Because I had pre-registered, when we arrived the necessary paperwork was already done. All I had to do was provide one signature,” Cindy explained. “At 9:45am they took me down to the operating room and at 10:14am our son was born. By 10:45am we were settled back in our room with Jackson in my arms.” Cindy also appreciated the combo nursing team at PeaceHealth Southwest. “It was really nice to have one nurse dedicated to your medical and comfort needs; and another dedicated to your baby’s needs,” she said. “That way, I didn’t feel uncomfortable requesting an extra pillow, more juic or assistance changing my baby’s diaper.” This level of care is especially important for mothers who have undergone C-sections. No matter where you deliver, don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Learn more about shoulder dystocia > Watch this informative video on C-sections > Share your story. ![]() Encouragement + An Assist = Success Nine days past her due date, Sara Howe was awakened at 3:00AM when her water broke. Thrilled that the long wait was finally over, Sara and her husband David packed up and headed to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. By 5:00AM they were comfortably settled into one of PeaceHealth Southwest’s Labor Delivery Recovery and Postpartum rooms, ready for action. But four hours later, Sara contractions had still not progressed so her midwife started her on Pitocin. Soon the contractions kicked in and Sara was well on her way. At around eight o’clock the next morning, it was time for Sara to start pushing. So she pushed. And she pushed, and she pushed, and she pushed. "The first few hours of pushing went by without me realizing the time," remarked Sara. "But around the fourth hour I started to wonder if I was still making progress. That is when the encouragement of my midwife, husband and the PeaceHealth Southwest nursing staff kept me going. It was like I had my own cheering section." Unfortunately, even with all the support and encouragement, Sara’s labor was not progressing because her baby’s head was tilted in the birth canal. Neither Sara or her midwife wanted her to have a Cesarean section after all that work, so her midwife suggested an assisted delivery. Read more > Share your story.
